I attended NOWIB’s Leadership luncheon today because a) NOWIB (Network of Women in Business) is awesome, and b) my company, Slingshot, works with interns and that’s what today’s discussion was about. Now, I don’t want this to be blantant promotion for Slingshot, because that is not the point here. The point is whether you are a big business or a small business, adding interns to your 2009 plan will not only allow your business to grow in a cost-effective way, it also allows you the chance to give back to a new generation!
I think there are some serious advantages to working with interns. This may be somewhat repetitive, but with the job market the way things are, students on the verge of graduation or those who’ve recently graduated and are new to the job market, are HUNGRY. Is your organization taking advantage of this?
By adding interns, you are giving work experience to someone who needs it. By giving them serious tasks (and some will indeed need some guidance, but not forever), you are helping to develop our future leaders, CEO’s, brand developers, businesses, etc.
At the meeting today, Lorraine Ball also mentioned something seriously important. When we use interns, this allows our companies a way to keep up with new ideas and ways of doing things (not in those exact words, but you get the point). Again, interns are a win/win. Is your company using interns? If not, why not??
