Pushing For Failure? Maybe?

Man, I am so freaking on fire..GOOD fire, AWESOME fire…like so excited to be a part of Smaller Indiana and connected to so many awesome people! (I know that my incessant excitement may get annoying…I KNOW!, but that’s who I am.)
So, yesterday, we had 275 people attend the Smaller Indiana Bigger Ideas event. Here is a thought that went through my head as I was listening to Jennie DeVoe speak. Someone had posted a blog on the reasons why they WEREN’T going to attend the conference, and I thought about this person, and then I felt sad, for just a moment, that they were missing this inspiring community venture. (Which, btw, Jennie DeVoe is an EXCEPTIONAL SPEAKER!) All of the speakers were, and thank you ALL for that. The only thing I can think of now is this: What can I do to contribute? Or better yet, what can I do that’s amazing? Not for me, but for you.

My best friend often talks to me about contribution, and I am a HUGE Seth Godin fan, and I felt like yesterday was a big “tribe” day with people who were a) showing up, b) were there to contribute, and c) we had brilliant leaders there to contribute to us. I was so inspired. And between what I’ve been putting in my head, and the people I’ve been able to connect with, it makes me wonder what my exact calling is. Because sometimes I just want to do it all. However, as I am at this weird, painful growth spot in my life, I’ve been wondering if anyone has ever just pushed for failure. I mean, often times in sales, I’ve heard to “go for the no.” Is it just a numbers game when it comes to being exceptional just as it is in sales? Do you have to put up with mediocrity for a while while you are pushing to be exceptional? Do you have to fail before you’re great?

My main point is that if there is no failure somewhere along the line (and really, a failure to me, is only an experience which then provokes necessary change if you are willing to make it)..but if there is no failure, I don’t think the lessons are as great. So, should we think of failure as success? Because ultimately, we know we’re just that much closer to doing something big? What do you think?

AND, thank you again, Pat Coyle, and to everyone who contributed yesterday. I can’t wait to do it again!!
