Social Media…blah blah blah…

Don’t you ever get tired of seeing the typical “social media” blog?

• 5 things every social media marketer needs to know…
• 10 things to make you rock on Twitter…
• 8 social media rules to live by…

Blah, blah, blah…

It’s all the same. What happened to the real reason why we love social media in the first place? Because there ARE NO RULES! Sure, we all learned some type of etiquette (hopefully) as we grew up…please, thank you, excuse me…all of which are part of being human and communicating in a way that makes other people feel that you’re not all about you. (Some are better at this than others, would you agree?)

I mean, social media isn’t some grand, “need to know the rules” kinda thing, is it? Did I miss that 101 course somewhere? Did I miss THAT blog? Everyone has their own style and take on things. Social media is just another way to get it all out there. It’s like one big conference call that everyone’s involved with…some are paying attention, others are wondering what they’re going to have for lunch.

I don’t like rules. I like real. I’ve been that way my whole life (just ask my parents). I feel like if you get stuck in the social media “rule book,” you just discount every single thing that Seth Godin and Hugh MacLeod are teaching us. Communication is an art. Most everyone in the world is gifted with this art.

You can put whatever message you want out there and either people will listen or they won’t. I’m all about reading blogs. I’m much more inclined to read something that’s going to tell me about the new tech stuff (thank you tech crunch and wired). I’m all about reading about the new haps in business and social media stuff (thank you mashable). I’m just tired of all the rules.

In my humble opinion, I want to know what people are feeling, what they’re experiencing and learning. Now THAT is the stuff that makes something worth reading. Experience is where the true lessons are. And sharing?…well, that’s what makes me love you even more.

  1. Be yourself and be real. Putting yourself out there is a risk, but isn’t it a blast?

    Keep Rockin!

  2. Refreshing! Thanks Lindsay!

  3. Degsyg says:

I agree 100% with you on this.

    Be yourself at all times!!

  4. But it’s more than about being yourself. It’s about not saying the same things over and over again. Share more of the real. Real is what makes money. I want to hear a story about a relationship that happened via Twitter that turned into business when you weren’t even looking for it. I want to hear about the divorce that made you so much stronger than you ever would have been. I want to hear about your crappy boss that doesn’t get it. The good, the bad, and the sucky. Not the do’s and don’ts. Do you feel me?

  5. And I want to know why my blog has “random photos” on it. Who can get that off? lol

  6. PJ says:

Social means different things to different people. While some are content to be ‘me too’ types, content to blend in and grab their small share of attention – I prefer the ‘listen to me’ person.

What I want? POV. Point of view.

And in conclusion. Freedom of speech is both a right and respnsibilty. But a conversation is earned. It is generous and important. Just like playing music.

  7. ooohhhh. me likey! PJ, have you met up with my friend, Simon Salt, in Austin? I want to come there SO bad! :)

  8. PJ says:

I’m trying to get to an Incslinger event. You should come. There’s a School of Rock, Bass Emporium, and unfortunately a Guitar Center within walking distance of my house.

Food, culture, thrift shopping, and tremondously fabulous attitudes about it all. There’s not too many places where you would not fit in. Austin is my favorite city in the country. So come on.

  9. This was excellent Lindsay and a reminder to me that I do not have to follow Rules!

  10. I’d say way to go, but that now seems way to compliant. Good stuff.

  11. For me it’s not even so much about rules as it is about form. That type of heading/subject is lazy, and it’s just bad form. It shows no creativity whatsoever and doesn’t make me inclined to read the post.

Nice work. Funny, I had just tweeted a similar sentiment, and a friend sent me a link to this post in response. We must be on a similar wavelength this week.

  12. I’m with you, Matt. : ) all over that wavelength.
    @dave : )

@Hazel…you’re no diva for rules! I know better!

  13. Eric Marasco says:

I was going to tell you the 5 things I liked about your post, joking! This post got me thinking differently, thanks!

  14. This post captures several of my own thoughts on social media. Sites like Facebook and Twitter cut through the insincerity and ambiguity of cyberspace. They provide us with the tools necessary to connect with others and have real, meaningful relationships. In my opinion, that is the purpose and value of social media. To rely on rules instead of being genuine renders it worthless. It’s our personalities that separate our tweets from everyday SPAM.

  15. @eric….I would have laughed. hard.

@drew…i hear ya! It’s personalities, but not only that, if someone if passionate about something and they want to shout, and get more people to their site, then shout! Do whatever you want! You get what you put out. :)

  16. You know, someone should write a book about this… oh, they did, lol.
I used to recommend this to most all my clients – http://tinyurl.com/235wlun

People’s need to do things “right” is only overcome by their need to be recognized at all…. Some want (need) the “good job”, others thrive on the “what were you thinking?, but I DO like it”…

  17. I totally agree. Let your freak flag fly!
