Lauren,
Wow, thank you for reading and commenting. You guys do an amazing job over there and there's not a horse in site! (Which is one of the reasons I visit and read.) My hopes for this industry are to get away from the cattiness and really get down to being committed to the clients we all work with...on every level.

I think that it's okay to challenge the status quo in blog posts the way that Kyle did. Part of the power of blogging is that it gives you the chance to tell how you are different from competitors.
With that said, are Kyle's points valid?
Some of them are. I think the most important thing in hiring a consultant is choosing someone that you are confident with and someone you like and who has done good work for others.
It doesn't so much matter if they've given a thousand seminars or if they blog 7 days a week. Check out their work, make sure you like working with them, make sure you can live with their fees and that you're confident you will get a good return for your money.

Kyle,
I see what you're saying there. (and I've been a bit overly sensitive this past week...which is perhaps why it struck me so hard.) What I mean by saying I believe sometimes people need to take chances, isn't by just hiring someone with no experience out of the gate. It means to recognize early talent that's natural. You can teach the tools. Some people were born marketers.
I agree with you though.

Social media is a cut throat environment. Your points are valid. We should be more accepting of others, less judgmental and start sharing our lessons learned...this is how our industry will grow. Thank you for your thoughts about the Radian6 blog. Our hope is to share our experiences (sometimes learned the hard way) with our readers...not sit on our high horse.

Brilliant post as usually Lindsay... you know I love you. :-)
My post was written in a very tongue-in-cheek sort of way and I agree with almost everything you have in your post. The one thing I do not agree with is the concept of giving someone a chance.
When hiring individuals for marketing it is important to confirm that they are actually competent to run the process of social media management.
It's not a viable concept to assume that somebody can run a campaign. Small to mid size companies cannot give someone a chance... they have to make money.

Lindsay, thank you for writing this post. You wrote what I have been thinking for a very long time. There are Social Media users around the world who have been knocking others down for too long, and it leaves me uncomfortable because this is not my style. I choose your style, which is to be supportive of all those trying to learn and teach how Social Media fits in to this world of strategic marketing of which many of us are a part.
Nicely done!!!

Cara,
Thanks for reading my post, and thank you for the input. Yes, let's inspire and build rather than tear down. And let's definitely LOL.

Lindsay:
My gratitude and appreciation for the response. There are many subjective judgements and now even more objective measures to the social media platform.
You are certainly part of my community and a valuable writer and communicator in twitterverse. In 2010, contract employment is what is available in the marketplace and now it is found in the world of public domain.
Let's create jobs, that allow for tele-communiting, innovative and inspiring work with purpose to serve, live, and even lol.
All the best with your endeavors,
Cara
